Magdalena Walter-Mazur gained her PhD from the Department of Musicology of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań in 2003 (dissertation on the madrigal-motet in seventeenth century Protestant Germany, published in Poznań, 2004), where she has since worked as an assistant professor, and from 2018 as a professor. For some years, she conducted research into music theory and seventeenth-century German Protestant music. In 2004, she published a Polish translation of Christoph Bernhard’s treatise Tractatus compositionis augmentatus. Now her interests include the musical culture of female convents on the territory of the Commonwealth of Poland-Lithuania during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. She has broadened her main area of interest – the relations between music, religion, spirituality and social life – with aspects of source studies. In 2014 she published the book on musical culture of polish female Benedictines in 17th and 18th century. Since 2010 she cooperate with RISM, in 2015 with Alina Mądry she established a RISM branch in Poznań. Currently she is working on a catalog of music collection of Diocesan Library in Sandomierz and on the theme of “opera in church”, i.e. the phenomenon of the popularity of religious contrafacta of operatic arias in eighteenth century.
